RSE/PSHE
Statement of Intent
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), acknowledges and addresses the opportunities, changes and challenges that young people experience in modern society. Through a carefully planned programme of study, students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to live healthy, safe and fulfilling lives, both now and in the future.
Our PSHE/RSE curriculum promotes and complements the personal development of every student. It explores key aspects of life in modern Britain, celebrating what we have in common while fostering respect for difference, diversity and the protected characteristics defined in law. Through this, students develop an understanding of their rights, responsibilities and role within a tolerant and democratic society.
At the heart of the programme is the school's 'self-science' strand, through which students develop the Gordon's values of courtesy, integrity, diligence, enthusiasm and resilience. Guided by our belief in 'Better Me, Better World', students are encouraged to recognise how positive choices, strong character and personal responsibility can have a meaningful impact on their communities and society as a whole. Through the 'Bounce (Don’t Break)' approach, students learn strategies to manage challenge, adversity and change with confidence, resilience and optimism.
PSHE/RSE lessons provide a safe and reflective environment in which students can explore their personal beliefs, values and attitudes. Students are encouraged to think critically, make informed decisions and 'call it out' when they encounter prejudice, injustice or harmful behaviour. In doing so, they develop respect for others, appreciation of diverse perspectives and the confidence to contribute positively to society.
The curriculum also prepares students for future success through the development of practical life skills, financial literacy, careers education and employability skills. Students learn how to build healthy relationships, manage risk, understand the influence of peers, media and technology, and appreciate that actions have consequences.
Ultimately, PSHE/RSE aims to develop knowledgeable, resilient and compassionate young people who embody the principle of 'Better Me, Better World'; individuals who are equipped to thrive personally, contribute positively to their communities and play an active role as responsible citizens in modern Britain.
