Terence Cuneo is one of the most distinctive British artists of the 20th century, known for his Railway paintings – often depicting steam locomotives with remarkable technical accuracy and drama, Military and engineering scenes – celebrating British industry and infrastructure and his Portraits and ceremonial works – including his role as official artist for the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. 

The artwork captures a scene from the Siege of Khartoum, featuring military figures and, of course, General Gordon. 'The Last Despatch' is a work of beautiful composition; the depth of colour – deep orange skies, the rich green of palm trees lining the river banks, as well as the bright pop of red from each fez. A charming trademark in many of his paintings is a hidden mouse, subtly included from the 1950s onwards—something collectors still enjoy spotting today.
