Governor Biographies

Mr Richard Whittington FCA
Chairman of Governors, Foundation Governor and Trustee

Retired in 2009 from KPMG where he was partner-in-charge of the Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare Group and simultaneously Global Head of Building and Construction. Now a non-executive director of The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and trustee and honorary treasurer of the Community Foundation for Surrey and a trustee of Surrey Care Trust. He has lived in Surrey for over 30 years, was High Sheriff of Surrey 2016-17 and appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey in 2018.

Mr Martin Barnes
Vice-Chairman, Foundation Governor and Trustee

Elected Parent Governor in December 2008 and appointed a Foundation Governor in 2011; has had two children at Gordon’s. Lives in West End.

Mr Peter Wynter Bee 
Foundation Governor and Trustee

Fourth generation of his family to live in West End. Trained as a solicitor and worked in private practice in London before moving to various commercial companies focused on mining and metals recycling as Company Secretary and General Counsel. Currently a consultant to ZincOx Resources plc and Non-Exec Chairman of Moxico Resources plc, a Zambian copper company. Spent 20 years in the TA, the Honourable Artillery Company and 19 years in the HAC’s Pikemen and Musketeers.

Mr Jay Tamsitt
Foundation Governor and Trustee

Chairman of the Gordonians. Pupil of Gordon’s School 1966-69. On leaving school joined accounts department of Swan & Edgar, moved to Sun Life of Canada, transferring to their Management Services Department as an O&M Analyst. Joined Abbey National in a similar role. Helped to set up Abbey National’s Independent Financial Services Ltd. Joined National Counties Building Society as MD of their IFA. 2003 moved to Dentons Pensions Management to set up and manage their IFA. Now in semi-retirement working with Homecroft Wealth (Oxted). Lives in Bletchingley. 

Mrs Lynn Bannister
Foundation Governor and Trustee

Parent of two former Gordon’s pupils and Chairman of the Gordon’s School Parents’ Association 2011-2014. Has worked for British Airways within different business areas of BA’s IT department, currently Information Security Operation Centre Manager. A 2012 Games Maker as chaperone in the Aquatics Anti-Doping team. Active ambassador for BA within schools, particularly encouraging girls into IT as a career. 

Mr Christopher Lomas 
Foundation Governor and Trustee

Following graduation from Harper Adams University, an extensive career in Golf Course management including Swinley Forest and The Berkshire, Ascot. Currently Secretary to Worplesdon Golf Club, Surrey. Played Rugby for England U21’s, England Universities and Surrey County.

Ms Gabriella De Turris
Foundation Governor and Trustee

A former solicitor, Gabriella worked at Freshfields in London before moving into Industry as in house counsel. At the University of Geneva, she changed focus with a masters degree in International Human Rights law and acted as a consultant for UN agencies specialising in governance, regulatory, employment and commercial issues. After returning to the UK, Gabriella completed a masters degree in Victorian Literature at Royal Holloway College and has worked on a voluntary basis whilst bringing up her family. She is a former governor of the British School of Paris.

Mrs Caroline Hutchings
Parent Governor

Elected in 2017 as a Parent Governor. Science teacher, holding an MSc in Applied Physics from Delft University, The Netherlands. Has three children, a daughter and son who are still at Gordon’s School and an older son who graduated from Gordon’s Sixth Form in 2016. Prior to teaching worked as a geophysicist for Shell International Exploration and Production in The Netherlands, England and Norway.

Mr Peter Rigby
Parent Governor

Elected in 2017 as a Parent Governor. Currently a parent of a pupil at Gordon’s School year 10 and a former pupil now studying Law at Exeter University. Also Chair & Trustee of Gordon’s School Parents’ Association since 2014 and previously a Parent Governor at Holy Trinity Primary School, West End. Career in Commercial and Business Management in the Information Technology sector in both UK & EMEA region. Worked with manufacturers and distributors selling network infrastructure products and more recently delivering energy efficiency projects within public sector saving millions of pounds in energy heating costs and reducing carbon footprint.

Mrs Alex Szabo-Rowe
Teacher Governor

Elected Teacher Governor in 2016. Alex joined the Gordon's School Mathematics Department in 2008 and has until recently led the development of the Honours Programme.

Mr Philip Berry
Teacher Governor

Elected Teacher Governor in 2017. Has taught at Gordon’s since 2013 and is currently Head of English.

Mrs Tracey Phillips
Staff Governor

Elected Staff Governor in 2016. Appointed in Gordon’s in 2012 as the school’s Assessment Manager. Is a parent to two former full-boarding Gordonians from Augusta and Windsor House.

Mr Kevin Gawley
Community Governor

Appointed Community Governor in July 2014. Has an extensive teaching career in Primary education. Retired as Head Teacher in 2013 from St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, Guildford where he continues as Executive Head Teacher as well as external consultant to two Teaching Schools and a multi-Academy Trust.

Mr Steve Broome
Foundation Governor

Steve currently works in the Advancement and Partnerships Directorate at the University of Surrey, with a remit to develop global industrial partnerships across the university's core strength areas including: health & medicine, space science, advanced engineering and 5G communications. Prior to this, Steve worked across a number of roles at a national technology innovation centre and before this, in consulting. Steve has a degree in pharmacology/physiology and a Masters in Management from Durham University Business School.
