  • pride of gordon's in rugby world cup

    Stressful weekend for our Head of PE, Paul King, watching two of his former pupils playing in the international arena. With Jake Ball squaring up to Faf de Klerk in the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup in Japan, his team reaching a cruel end to the journey, another, Steven Brown played the round of his life in the Portugal Golf Masters. Jake arrived at Gordon’s as a rugby player but switched to cricket for a couple of years, playing for Surrey County and Wokingham Cricket Club. Steven was a scratch golfer during his schooldays but also played for Gordon’s First XI football team. “But both lads have done themselves, Gordon’s and their countries proud” said Mr King, adding that his eyes are now on the Paralympics next year for another of his proteges, Hannah Russell.

  • MUN debating

    Four days of intense and high quality debating at the 39th Annual Royal Russell Model United Nation Conference saw 15 Gordon's students making many good speeches (and friends from around the world!) for and against resolutions. Head Boy Oliver was part of the MUNs International Court of Justice while Grace and Teah chaired committees. Congratulations all.

    Our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award students have taken advantage of their half term holiday for a canoeing expedition on the River Wye in Hereford.     Windsor House swept to victory last night in the Inter-House Music finals. The girls wowed the judges from the Royal Alexandra and Albert SchoolWoking High School and Gordon's with the Adele hit 'Rolling in the Deep'. In second place were spirited performances by Gravesend with Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and in third place Balmoral with Cold Play's Yellow. In summing up the evening, Lewis Edney Director of Music at the RAA said that each of the Houses had been "absolutely amazing" and he had been "blown away" by the ensembles.

    Presented with the Sword of Honour and Gardiner Memorial Award in June, as the best senior cadet in Gordon’s CCF, Gordonian David Hutchings was also invited on a tandem parachute jump with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. This week, he took to the skies above Wiltshire at the Netheravon Airfield for the jump.

    Tom Gordon, a direct descendant of General Charles Gordon officially opened Woolwich House today, saying General Gordon would have “approved and been very proud” of the bespoke Residential Boarding house for Year 7 students. The new house marks a return of the Woolwich name to Gordon’s after a 27 year absence. The light, contemporary building offers a term time ‘home’ to 32 Residential Boarders beginning their journey at the school from the age of 11.

    Challenged through the RHS Campaign for School Gardening to create a garden, our Gardening Club are producing a ‘mindfulness garden’ outside the Medical Centre. Today they measured the PH of the soil so they can decide the plants that will thrive best there. As part of the RHS Green Plan It scheme, they are also looking forward to a visiting horticultural mentor from Wisley Gardens to advise on the design.

    They performed brilliantly in their team building exercises at the start of term. Now our Year 12 students are competing against each other for Senior Prefect positions! Forty six students have put themselves forward for the 24 positions. Students will be selected for interview based on their letter of application; completion of an in-tray exercise and the reference from their Head of House. Best of luck to all of them.
