Poetry by heart
Poetry by Heart is the latest Academic Pursuit that Gordon’s students are taking by storm. Far from a passive pastime, poetry recitation is a fiercely competitive arena in which students strive to understand, interpret and perform some of the world’s most beautiful and painful poetry. Whilst learning poetry clearly supports the new style English Literature examination expectations, it also provides a high level of academic challenge for students of all ages.
Poetry by Heart is open to all students in KS3, 4 and 5 and will be centred around the national competition, Arete competitions, Interschool competitions and outside poetry competitions. In 2018/19 we will be developing our Poetry strand and giving students the opportunity to meet poets and develop their skills.
In line with the World War One centenary, much of the 2017/18 competition focus has been on poetry by the likes of Sassoon, Owen and Brookes. Our students (and staff!) rose to the challenge: in the national Poetry by Heart competition (our first ever school poetry competition in which we only entered in 2 categories) we achieved highly with a commendation and a national winner. Later in the academic year we came second in the first ever Arete Poetry by Heart competition.
Our newfound success and passion is being reflected through both our English curriculum (in which performance poetry and oracy are now being explicitly taught and assessed) and we are looking forward to an even more successful competition year in 2018/19.
