Bethune Family Challenge

Inspired by the London Marathon fundraising run achieved by Buckingham Head of House Jamie Sinclair, the Bethune family have set themselves a challenge also raising money to equip the new sports hub and all-weather pitch for Gordon’s School.

The family of five will undertake a sponsored cycle ride from Gordon’s to Brighton – just under 90 kilometres on Saturday 15th June.

Isla, aged 14 and her brother Lachlan, aged 12 – both boarders at Gordon’s in Woking - will attempt the feat with their parents Gavin and Celia and younger sister Bea, aged 8.

“Lachlan was telling us about Mr Sinclair’s run and he said we ought to do something to help and could we do something with cycling” said Mrs Bethune.

The family then hit on the idea of Gordon’s to Brighton Pier.

Most of the 90km route will be off-road. From West End they will head towards Guildford and pick up the Downs link from Shalford to Shoreham before taking the coastal route to Brighton.

The Bethunes, who live in Saudi, are no strangers to long distance cycling, having spent their last Christmas holiday on their bikes cycling from Thailand to the bottom of Cambodia, averaging 30kms per day - some 450 kms in total! However, the trip to Brighton is the furthest the family have attempted in one day.

Lachlan is a triathlon athlete and member of British Triathlon and his father is a keen cyclist, clocking some 12,000 kms per year.

“We really enjoyed our cycling holiday” said Mrs Bethune, adding “and we want to do more cycling together as a family”.

She can see only one problem with their Brighton ride - the rain and keeping up with her elder two children and husband! “We’re going to give Gavin a heavy rucksack to slow him down” she confided.

Bethune Family Challenge Update - June 2019

Children in the Bethune family take to their bikes in Saudi during the half term holiday to train for their marathon bike ride at the end of June.

No half term break for the Bethune family, who are training hard for their 90 kilometre bike ride from Gordon’s to Brighton this month. The five of them, who are determined to raise £3,000 for the new sports hub and all-weather pitch at Gordon’s for use by the school and local community were busy building up their stamina for the marathon ride near their home in Saudi. Poor mum Celia was rendered housebound after breaking her toe but stoically continued to train in the house with the help of painkillers. She said: "I am determined to do this sponsored cycle for Gordon’s, even if I have to do the whole thing in my hospital shoe, as the school does so much for our two children.”
Please help them achieve their sponsorship target:
