The stage is set for Gordon’s Annual Parade and Prize Giving today, which in a break from tradition, will be held on the Front Field under the gaze of General Charles Gordon’s statue. The Guest of Honour is the High Sheriff of Surrey Mr Jim Glover and Gordon’s will also be welcoming friends from Sudan and the Khartoum International Community School (KICS) Mr Osama Latif; Mrs Samia Omar; Dr Ronnie Shaul; Mr Fadil Banayoti and Mr Michael Tibbs.
Gordon’s Chaplain the Rev Sarah Norbron is to be ordained a priest at Guildford Cathedral today at the Petertide Ordinations. The Rev Norbron will be officially licensed by the Bishop of Dorking Dr Jo Bailey Wells. A Design and Technology teacher at Gordon’s, The Rev Norbron assisted the Reverend Denis Robinson, for eight years, taking over as Chaplain when he retired. The Reverend Robinson will be giving the Gordonian chapel service today.
Eastenders actress Emma Barton dropped in to Gordon’s last night for the Creative Arts G2G showcase evening. The actress, who plays Honey Mitchell in the long running soap delighted students by meeting them afterwards and giving them some top acting tips. Talented students wowed last night’s audience with song; dance and their work from Frantic Assembly.
Fresh from performing in the Royal Memorial Chapel at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst for the Civic Service of the new Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Dan Adams, Gordon’s School chamber choir, Semper Fidelis Singers, are hosting a lunchtime concert at St Mary at Hill (Lovat Lane, Eastcheap, London EC3R 8EE), on Tuesday 3rd July. The recital starts at 1.15pm. If any parents, relatives or friends work in London and would like a refreshing way to spend their lunch hour then this 30 minute recital may be just the thing and the choir would be delighted to see you.
A student restores the paintwork on the piper that has become such a popular feature at Gordon’s, in readiness for the Annual Parade on Saturday. The Parade will be the last in the school calendar for this academic year and welcomes family, friends and Gordonians.
Students from 7B held a sponsored silence to raise money for Mary’s Meals, a charity that feeds students in schools in Africa with a meal a day. They stayed silent in form/chapel and in their houses - in fact at all times apart from lessons - for two days. Their silence raised over £200 and means they will able to pay for 14 African children to eat a meal a day for a year.
After months of revision followed by exams, Sixth Form Students were able to let their hair down at the Gordon’s Olympic Games. Egg and spoon races; Apple bobbing and a spin yourself around a hockey stick were just a few of the traditional and creative sports they took part in. The event was enjoyed by all and proved the perfect tonic to all the stresses of exams.
In spite of the sweltering temperatures, Gordon’s drummers found a cool spot to practise their Drummers Beating for Annual on Saturday. This year – for the first time in many years, the Annual Parade will be held on the Front Field.
It’s not the Gordon’s haka, it’s ‘Frantic Assembly’! Years 8 to 13 are taking part in Frantic Assembly, which is one of the most studied and praised theatre companies working today. The aim is to make brave and bold theatre – at times physically dynamic and brutal and at others tender and fragile.The students are putting together a fabulous show for tomorrow's Creative Arts G2G showcase Evening.
They were silent, they collected secondhand clothes and they increased awareness of their charity. In all, Class 4 of Y9 PSHE raised £857 for their charity Woking and Sam Beare Hospices through sponsorship and donations. Last night they were voted winners of the £1,000 cheque from First Give which will be added to the money already given to the charity they care so deeply about. Seven judges listened to presentations from four classes, who gave impassioned information about their chosen charities – Alzheimer’s Society; Stepping Stones; Samson Centre for MS and Woking and Sam Beare Hospices. The team of Harriet Duffin, Tilly Phillips, Livvy Garner and Nathan Butler emerged winners and were presented with their £1,000 cheque for their charity.
Proud day for Student members of the Gordon’s School choir Semper Fidelis who sang in the Royal Memorial Chapel at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. The choir were asked to sing at the Civic Service for the new Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Dan Adams.
Windsor House girls and staff donned their running gear (and anything pink!) to take part in Race for Life. Thirty two of them ran five kilometres in Basingstoke, raising a staggering £2,500 for Cancer Research UK.
