They completed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze practise this half term holiday in The Surrey Hills. Now students from Year 10 and Year 11 are heading off for the overnight final at Henfold Lakes near Dorking after their briefing from Mr Fox. Wishing them the best of luck.

As dawn breaks on Sunday November 11th, the centenary of the end of the First World War, the solitary figure of Gordon’s School Piper Edward Lee will play the lone piper lament ‘Battle’s O’er’ at the top of the Tower of Guildford Cathedral. Seventeen year old Edward, now in his final year at Gordon’s, is one of 1,000 pipers from across the country playing this haunting melody, a traditional Scottish air played after battle. Each piper will be based in individual locations within their communities. At the same time a specially written tribute will be read out. The event marks the start of a day in which countries from around the world such as New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, France, Belgium, Canada and Germany will join in commemorating Battle’s Over. The lone pipers will be followed that night by buglers sounding the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations before beacons are lit to signify the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. Head Girl Nicola Gilbert and Senior Prefect Connor Kirkpatrick attended the Annual Head of School Conference at Wellington College. The event, now in its 13th year, welcomed 45 schools from across the UK as well as Guernsey and France and provided an opportunity to share good practice; develop their leadership skills and explore future networking opportunities.
Looking for minute amounts of specially hidden explosives in the Rec today are police dogs Lola and Rogue. The dogs are training at Gordon’s during with The Guildford Police Dog Training Unit. Both passed with flying colours!
A Poetry Slam ended four weeks of performance poetry by students in Year 7. Those taking part in the competition gave passionate recitals about many contentious issues and ones close to their hearts such as suicide; anxiety; a trouble free world and falling in love with a mermaid! They were judged by their peers who voted Jemima Robinson in first place followed by Thomas Allen.
Usually dressed in the distinctive green, Gordon’s students (and staff!) have donned every shade of pink today. Their mufti attire will raise money for Breast Cancer Now’s ‘Wear it Pink’ day.

Congratulations to China House for winning the Inter-House Hockey tournament. They were followed by Victoria in second place and Augusta, third. The next Inter-House event will be the Boys’ Rugby on Saturday 3rd November. Supporters welcome!
Gordon’s Pipes and Drums will be taking part in the Concert for Peace event on Saturday 10th November at G Live as part of the Guildford Remembers Weekend. The community concert, in aid of the Royal British Legion, will feature a selection of music and readings as a tribute to all those in Guildford and surrounding area who gave their life in the Great War and conflicts since. The narrators will be Dame Penelope Keith and Gordon Foundation Trustee Michael More-Molyneux the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey. For tickets and more information, please click here.
