Summer Arts Evening

We held our summer arts evening again this year and, as always, it was a wonderful event filled with talented students

After a week of blistering heat, we watched with horror as the temperatures plummeted and rain swept across the country for our Annual Summer Arts Event. However we needn’t have worried as Rev Robinson had prayed extra hard for us and the day was overcast but fine. And just as well, as the quality of pupil performance this year was as high as ever and equally diverse. The large school ensembles performed with great enthusiasm. We were also delighted to welcome groups from our local community including Holy Trinity C Of E Primary choir, the Gordon Singers and a Madeline Epple a soloist from Germany who was visiting as part of the German Department exchange programme. Of particular note were our Y10 performers, for some of whom this was their first public performance.

Drama had three slots in the evening; the first was ‘Love Song’ which was directed by Mr Olden. This involved four students from Key Stage 4 and 5, who performed a fantastic piece of physical theatre piece to music and spoken word. The second was a piece which combined a mixture of dance and physical theatre to produce an adapted version of ‘Red Shoes’, directed by Sophie Findlay. What was lovely about this piece is that it involved a number of male and female students from Year 8 all the way up to Year 12. For the third performance of the evening, Drama had enlisted the help of Frantic Assembly. Frantic Assembly are a well renowned Theatre Company that complete excellent devised shows around the world. They have created the physical work in performances such as ‘The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-time’, ‘Othello’ and ‘Things I Know to Be True’. We were very fortunate to enlist their help with one of our performance pieces for the evening and they created a beautiful piece with a selection of ‘Good To Great’ male and female students ranging from Year 9 to Year 12.

The art exhibition was a wonderful mix of work by students from all years as well as staff and the finance department were kept busy with sales of art work. A lovely addition this year was Mrs Dalrymple and her senior string players adding some background music for browsing.
